The Diamond Royals are preparing to conclude their 2018 regular season at home in hopes of finishing on a high note. Even with an 11-22 overall record, 2-12 in conference, the men are still fighting for a spot in the ODAC tournament.

Graduating 12 talented seniors last year left this year’s team with big shoes to fill. With the returning players not having as much collegiate game experience, upperclassmen stepped up and provided leadership to the 16 first-year players.

Throughout his collegiate career, junior Zach Roberts has played an integral role on the team as shortstop. As a critical player, Roberts provides much-needed leadership to a young roster.

Unfortunately, the week before conference games began, Roberts went out with a season-ending injury, tearing his labrum. Despite his injury that keeps him off the field, he still provides veteran focus and necessary motivation to his teammates.

First-year Billy Quinn leans on Robert’s mentorship for guidance, as he steps into this important role. Quinn said, “Compared to high school, collegiate baseball is a totally different ball game. Though Zach is injured, I am grateful for his encouragement and support during every practice and game.”

ODAC foes Shenandoah University, Randolph-Macon College, and Roanoke College are all nationally ranked as part of the Top 25 in the country.

With a very competitive conference, the Royals went and took advantage of opportunities in a win during a non-conference game. The team continue to impress, picking up a 5-4 road win at nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University.

Even with a young roster, five or six first-years begin each game, versus other teams who only start one to two underclassmen.

Senior pitcher Tristan Childress explains that this season has been an adjustment for the team.

He says, “It has been a growing season, a learning curve for everyone, and the team continues to develop.”

Head Coach Ben Spotts continues to push this young roster to play their best. Not only does he look forward to finishing this season strong, but he also begins to prepare his team for the upcoming season ahead.

The Royals remain competitive as they prepare to host a double-header against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. for Alumni Recognition Day.

These games are followed by one game against Bridgewater College and two against Lynchburg College to end the regular season.
