Before jumping into my brief review of Latin’s Flavor, I would like to make an announcement. As many of you know restaurants have been struggling to survive during the coronavirus pandemic. Many people simply do not want to risk going out to eat or have been struggling for money themselves. To combat the slowness of business, Harrisonburg has decided to expand the usual yearly “Taste of Downtown” event into an entire month celebrating the various restaurants found in our lovely city.

Downtown Harrisonburg restaurant month has already started and will continue through March. It includes a variety of promotions and new foods from many of the downtown restaurants. In addition to this, the Downtown Harrisonburg Renaissance organization is having a raffle every week in which a few lucky winners will receive 50 Downtown Dollars! These dollars can be used to eat at any eligible restaurant in the downtown area, the list and raffle entry information can be found on the downtown Harrisonburg website.

Now, to the food! Sadly, this week I was pressed for time and was forced to order delivery rather than go to the restaurant myself. So I cannot give an opinion on the customer service or interior of Latin’s Flavor. However, I can say without a doubt that their food is delicious. I was only able to try one of their many dishes. Their menu is extensive and offers flavors from all over Latin America. The four categories are El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Caribeño, each including food from the varying regions. The most extensive section is of course  Caribeño, as this refers to food from the entirety of the Caribbean. From this section, I chose the Chachapas Mixtas, a mixture of sausage, beef, chicken, and cheese all wrapped in a sweet corn tortilla. At first, I was nervous about the tortilla being sweet, but upon trying it, I was pleasantly surprised. It is a thicker tortilla that is more of a dough than the traditional thin ones. It offers a nice texture alongside the fillings. In retrospect, I should have expected something heavy with the combination of ingredients and was full around halfway through the meal. That being said, it is a good option for $11 and satisfies any meat lover’s cravings. While each of the meats offers a unique flavor and texture, they blend quite nicely into a gooey and bready bite.

Overall, Latin’s Flavor is a good option for an inexpensive and filling meal. The food is authentic and delicious, if a little heavy, and in supporting them you are supporting a downtown restaurant! I look forward to returning and trying more options when I have more time.
