I am sure that most of you who are reading this article have seen the news in the past couple of weeks about what China has been doing recently and how they have been sending different objects into the United States or Canadian airspace. A couple of weeks ago, the United States spotted a spy balloon in US airspace, which was believed to have been sent by China.. It was first spotted floating over Montana. When this was announced to the public, many congress members called on President Biden to shoot it down, mainly Republicans and Democratic senator of Montana Jon Tester. They were furious that President Biden was refusing to shoot down the spy balloon. A couple of days later, however, it was shot down off the coast of South Carolina. I think Biden did the right thing in waiting to shoot it down. Sure, it was able to go over most of the United States and gather intelligence, but according to the United States military, this balloon was about the size of a regional jet, and it was flying over populated areas. I think things could have gone badly if we had shot it down before we did. It could have crashed into a populated area, and who knows what could’ve happened to those underneath. I think that it was wise of our military to wait until it was over the ocean for them to shoot it down.. The military also has said that if they shot it down over land, the payload would have a greater chance of being destroyed, and then we wouldn’t be able to figure out what it was taking a picture of or what it was doing. It was wise to wait until it was flying over the ocean so they could try to recover it to see what intelligence they gathered.

I do think that it was essential that President Biden shot them down. It shows China that you can not mess with him and that he will not tolerate antics like this. It also shows the American public that Biden is tough on China sometimes; Democrats are accused of being soft on China, so this is key. I just hope that this is the end of it all and we do not see anything else of China flying over our country.
