Harrisonburg, Va. – Police are continuing to investigate an assault that occurred on Wednesday evening in Purcell Park, a popular recreation area less than four miles away from EMU.

According to a release from the Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD), a woman was walking along the park’s trails around 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 8 when an unknown man came out of the brush, grabbed her, and attempted to sexually assault her before fleeing the scene.

Authorities noted that the victim described the suspect as a clean-shaven Hispanic between 20 and 40 years old, wearing dark colored t-shirt and pants, possibly black or dark blue.

HPD officers, joined by the James Madison University Police Department, the HPD’s Major Crimes Unit, a K9 team, and the city’s drone team, searched the area but did not locate the suspect. Police believed he left the area immediately after the assault, according to Rocktown Now and WHSV3 reports.

Radio traffic from local emergency services also confirmed that first responders were dispatched to Purcell Park for an assault call that evening.

“As HPD’s Major Crimes Unit continues their investigation, community members are encouraged to take proactive steps to stay safe while enjoying local parks and trails,” HPD said in a public statement. “Walk in well-lit, populated areas, when possible, stay aware of your surroundings, and let a friend or family member know where you will be and your expected return time.”

HPD is asking residents near the park to check doorbell or security cameras for any suspicious activity or individuals matching the suspect’s description. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Thurston at 540-217-5873 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050.

Purcell Park, located off Monument Avenue, is frequently visited by EMU students for exercise and outdoor activities. Although there is no indication that students were involved or targeted, the park’s proximity to campus makes awareness and caution especially important.

Community members are encouraged to follow basic safety practices: walk in well-lit areas, avoid isolated trails, stay aware of your surroundings, and let someone know your expected return time.
