This weekend, CAC organized a cupcake bake-off for EMU students to compete in over the weekend. Students were invited to join in the event with their friends or individually. On Friday, Feb. 18, students were invited to go to the University Commons Hall of Nations to pick up the supplies they needed for their cupcakes. CAC provided students with flour mix, eggs, oil, sprinkles, food coloring, piping bags, tips, and icing. Students participating were given the whole weekend to make their own cupcakes, and then submit a picture to CAC by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20.

After CAC received the photos of the cupcakes, the judges from Pioneer Food Services – Bruce Emmerson, Shannon Grinnan, and David Chun – had the task of choosing the best cupcakes as the winners. The criteria for the winner were based on overall presentation, creativity, and skills. The winners of the contest got a $25 gift card to Harrisonburg’s Cupcake Factory.

This is the second time CAC has organized this event. Last spring semester was the first time that CAC organized this event. It proved to be a success because a lot of students accepted the challenge of showing off their baking and decorating abilities. Given the success of that first bake-off, they decided to do it again,  and, just like last year, it was well received by many students.

Assistant Director of Students Program, Tyler Goss, said, “It was such a great event last year that we had to have it again! Like last year, participants have blown us away with their creativity!”

Many students who entered the contest chose a theme for making and decorating their cupcakes.  When submitting the pictures of her cupcakes, senior Sarah Grossen added, “Beautiful tree and mountain cupcakes with a starry sky,” as the theme for her cupcakes.

Junior Allison Southfield also added a theme to her cupcakes saying, “Our theme is enchanted forest. Please be enchanted!”

Many students chose unique themes for their cupcake submissions in order to show their creativity while also having fun. For instance, Valentine’s Day was a theme for some students, “Gay space vibe,” was another theme chosen by Sophomore Indigo Gott.

Many students submitted photos of their cupcakes, showing off their creativity and skills over the weekend which made the contest another success. After much discussion, the judges were unable to choose just one winner which resulted in a tie between the team of Seniors Veronica Horst and Molly Piwonka and Sophomore Sarah Pereverzoff. CAC decided to give each of those two entries a $20 gift card to The Cupcake Company.
